General Laurence James Oliphant, 9th of Condie was born on 14 December 1846.1 He is the son of Laurence Oliphant, 8th of Condie and Marianne Oliphant.2 He married Hon. Mary Monica Gerard, daughter of Robert Tolver Gerard, 1st Baron Gerard of Bryn, on 19 November 1878.1 He died on 6 July 1914 at age 67.1
General Laurence James Oliphant, 9th of Condie fought in the Sudan Campaign in 1885.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Perthshire.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902, where he was mentioned in despatches.3 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Home District between 1903 and 1906.1 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1905.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Northern Command between 1907 and 1911.1 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1911.1
