     He fought in the First World War.2 He gained the rank of officer in the service of the 13th Hussars, Rusisan Imperial Cavalry.2 He fought in the Russian Civil War between 1918 and 1921.2

     Captain Samuel Irwin Townsend was born circa 1766.1 He was the son of Lt.-Gen. Samuel Irwin Townsend and Elizabeth Aikenhead.1 He married, firstly, Katherine Thomas, daughter of David Thomas, in 1796.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Whitfield in 1815.1 He died on 21 October 1849.1
     He gained the rank of Cornet on 14 July 1783 in the service of the 1st Foot Guards.1 He gained the rank of Ensign on 22 September 1795.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 28 August 1799.1
