     Ruth Hellman was born on 9 January 1936.2 She is the daughter of Joseph Hellman and Dr. Ellen Kaumheimer.2 She married, firstly, Dennis Mack Smith in 1959.2 She and Dennis Mack Smith were divorced in 1962.2 She married, secondly, Walter Garrison Runciman, 3rd Viscount Runciman of Doxford, son of Walter Leslie Runciman, 2nd Viscount of Runciman of Doxford and Katherine Schuyler Garrison, on 17 April 1963.1
     She was educated at Rodean School, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa.2 She graduated from Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 From 1959, her married name became Smith.2 She graduated from Girton College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)2 From 17 April 1963, her married name became Runciman.
