James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle was born circa 1580 at Scotland.1 He was the son of Sir James Hay and Margaret Murray.1,2 He married Lady Honora Denny, daughter of Edward Denny, 1st and last Earl of Norwich and Lady Mary Cecil, on 6 January 1608.3 He married, secondly, Lady Lucy Percy, daughter of Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland and Lady Dorothy Devereux, on 6 November 1617, in the King's presence, but without her father's consent.1 He died on 25 April 1636 at Whitehall, London, England.1 He was buried on 6 May 1636 at St. Paul's Cathedral, The City, London, England.1 He died intestate and his estate was administered on 20 May 1637.4
