Robert Barlow Palmer Byng was born on 30 November 1816.1 He married Elizabeth Maria Lowther Gwatkin, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Edward Gwatkin and Hetty Elizabeth Gascoigne, on 11 February 1839.1 He died on 18 December 1857 at age 41 at Alumbagh, India, killed while on active service.1
