     Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 2nd Bt. was born on 8 November 1676.1 He was the son of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Henderson.2 He married, firstly, Lady Margaret Stewart, daughter of Sir Alexander Stewart, 3rd Earl of Galloway and Lady Mary Douglas, on 23 February 1701.1 He married, secondly, Janet Inglis, daughter of Sir James Inglis of Cramond, 2nd Bt. and Anne Cockburn, on 15 November 1709.1 He died on 4 October 1755 at age 78.1
     Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 2nd Bt. was a composer (works include ‘Symphonia for Cantata (sic) Odo di mesto intorno').1 He was a practising Advocate on 20 July 1700.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Whithorn [Scotland] between 1702 and 1707.1 He was Commissioner for the Union.1 He held the office of Baron of the Exchequer [Scotland] between 1707 and 1755.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Whithorn from 1707 to 1708.3 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [N.S., 1679] in 1722.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) in 1725.3 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1728.3 He had five other sons and five other daughters by his second wife.1

     Janet Inglis was the daughter of Sir James Inglis of Cramond, 2nd Bt. and Anne Cockburn.1,2 She married Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 2nd Bt., son of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Henderson, on 15 November 1709.1 She died on 29 January 1760.1
     From 15 November 1709, her married name became Clerk.1

     Sir James Clerk of Penicuik, 3rd Bt. was born circa 1710.3 He was the son of Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 2nd Bt. and Janet Inglis.2 He married Elizabeth Cleghorn, daughter of Reverend John Cleghorn.1 He died on 6 February 1782, without issue.1
     Sir James Clerk of Penicuik, 3rd Bt. succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [N.S., 1679] on 4 October 1755.1
