     Frances Cay was the daughter of Robert Cay.2 She married John Clerk-Maxwell of Middlebie, son of James Clerk and Janet Irving, in 1826.1 She died on 6 December 1839.1

     James Clerk-Maxwell of Middlebie was born on 13 June 1831.1 He was the son of John Clerk-Maxwell of Middlebie and Frances Cay.2 He married Katherine Mary Dewar, daughter of Very Rev. Daniel Dewar, on 2 June 1858.1 He died on 5 November 1879 at age 48, without issue.1
     James Clerk-Maxwell of Middlebie was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.).1 He was Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He lived at Middlebie, Dumfries-shire, Scotland.1
