John Scrymgeour, 1st Earl of Dundee was the son of James Scrymgeour, 2nd Viscount Dudhope and Lady Isabella Ker.2 He married Lady Anne Ramsay, daughter of William Ramsay, 1st Earl of Dalhousie and Lady Margaret Carnegie, in July 1644.1 He died on 23 June 1668, without issue.1
John Scrymgeour, 1st Earl of Dundee succeeded to the title of 3rd Lord Scrimgeour [S., 1641] in 1644.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Dudhope [S., 1641] in 1644.1 In 1645 he raised a regiment of 250 horse.1 In 1645 he served under Montrose.1 In 1648 he served under Hamilton.1 He was wounded at Torwood.1 In 1651 he carried the standard of King Charles II on the march to Worcester.1 In 1654 he raised a regiment of horse under the Earl of Middlesex.1 He was captured and has his estates sequestered.1 He was created 1st Earl of Dundee [Scotland] in September 1660, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.1 He was created 1st Viscount of Dudhope [Scotland] in September 1660, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.1 He was created 1st Lord Scrimgeour and Innerkeithing [Scotland] in September 1660, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.1 On his death, the elder line of Dudhope expired but when he would normally have been succeeded in his titles and estates by his heir-male.3

Lady Anne Ramsay is the daughter of William Ramsay, 1st Earl of Dalhousie and Lady Margaret Carnegie.2 She married, firstly, John Scrymgeour, 1st Earl of Dundee, son of James Scrymgeour, 2nd Viscount Dudhope and Lady Isabella Ker, in July 1644.1 She married, secondly, Sir Henry Bruce of Clackmannan on 13 October 1670.3
