Lt.-Col. James Oliphant was born on 23 August 1796.1 He was the son of Ebenezer Oliphant and Mary Stirling.2 He married, firstly, Lucy Maidman, daughter of George Maidman, in 1824.3 He married, secondly, Sophia Ann Trewman, daughter of General T. T. Trewman, in 1836.1 He died in 1881.1
Lt.-Col. James Oliphant gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Madras Engineers.3 He was a Director of the Honourable East India Company between 1844 and 1857.3 He was Chairman of the Honourable East India Company in 1854.3 He had four sons (who all died without issue ) and two daughters by his first wife.3
