William Cuninghame, 12th Earl of Glencairn was the son of John Cuninghame, 11th Earl of Glencairn and Lady Jean Erskine.1,2 He married Lady Henrietta Stewart, daughter of Alexander Stewart, 3rd Earl of Galloway and Lady Mary Douglas, on 20 November 1704.1 He died on 14 March 1733/34.1
William Cuninghame, 12th Earl of Glencairn was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland].1 He succeeded to the title of 12th Earl of Glencairn [S., 1488] on 14 December 1703.1 He succeeded to the title of 12th Lord Kilmaurs [S., 1464] on 14 December 1703.1 He held the office of Governor Dumbarton Castle between 1715 and 1734.1 He had seven other sons, who all died without issue.1
