     Brig.-Gen. Sir Bertram Percy Portal was born on 10 January 1866.2 He was the son of Sir Wyndham Spencer Portal, 1st Bt. and Mary Jane Beach.2 He married Hon. Margaret Louisa Littleton, daughter of Edward George Percy Littleton, 3rd Baron Hatherton and Charlotte Louisa Rowley, on 12 April 1899.2 He died on 7 February 1949 at age 83.2
     He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He gained the rank of officer in 1885 in the 17th Lancers.2 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Madras between 1896 and 1898.2 He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the South African Medal with three clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1902.2 He was Lieutenant-Colonel and Brevel Colonel of the 17th Lancers between 1903 and 1907.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) for Hampshire.1 He fought in the First World War, he was mentioned in despatches.2 He was Commander of the Reserve Cavalry Regiment between 1916 and 1916.2 He was Commander of the Cavalry Brigade between 1916 and 1918 at France.2 He gained the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General in 1919.2 He was chairman of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Territorial Army Association between 1925 and 1938.2 He held the office of County Councillor (C.C.) for Hampshire between 1932 and 1942.2 He held the office of Vice-Lieutenant of Hampshire between 1932 and 1942.2 He was the Governor between 1934 and 1944 at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1937.2 He held the office of County Alderman (C.A.) of Hampshire in 1943.2

     From 19 April 1900, her married name became Jackson.
