He was the son of Adolf Friedrich I von Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Marie Katherine von Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Dannenberg.1 He married, firstly, Johanna von Sachsen-Gotha, daughter of Friedrich I Herzog von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalena Sibylle Prinzessin von Sachsen-Weissenfels, on 20 June 1702 at Strelitz. He married, secondly, Christiane Emilie von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, daughter of Christian Wilhelm Prinz von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and Antonie Sybille von Barby-Muhlingen, on 10 June 1705. He died on 12 May 1708 at age 49.
