Alexander Macdonald, 10th Earl of Ross was the son of Donald Macdonald, Lord of the Isles and Mary Leslie, Countess of Ross.1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Seton, daughter of Sir Alexander Seton, Lord of Gordon and Huntly.1 He married unknown daughter Macphee, daughter of Macphee of Lochaber.1 He died on 7 May 1449.
Alexander Macdonald, 10th Earl of Ross succeeded to the title of Lord of the Isles in 1423.1 He succeeded to the title of 10th Earl of Ross in 1423.1 In 1424 he was recognised by King James I of Scotland (on his release by the English) as the Earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles.1 In 1427 he was ordered by King James I to attend a Highland chiefs meeting at Inverness, and placed under house arrest.1 He gained the rank of Battle at Lochaber on 23 June 1429 in the service of the where he was defeated by King James I, after he gathered an army of men from the Isles and Ross, and put Inverness and its environs to fire.1 In January 1435/36 he was recognised again as Earl of Ross, after being confined for a period in Tantallon Castle.1 He held the office of Justiciar North of the Forth in 1438.1
