John William Ramsay, 13th Earl of Dalhousie was born on 29 January 1847 at Aberdour House, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.2 He was the son of Admiral George Ramsay, 12th Earl of Dalhousie and Sarah Frances Robertson.1 He married Lady Ida Louisa Bennet, daughter of Charles Augustus Bennet, 6th Earl of Tankerville and Lady Olivia Montagu, on 6 December 1877 at St. James, Westminster, London, England.2 He died on 25 November 1887 at age 40 at Hotel Frascati, Le Havre, France.2
He gained the rank of Commander in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He held the office of Equerry to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh between 1874 and 1876.1 He held the office of Extra Equerry to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh between 1876 and 1880.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Liverpool in 1880.1 He held the office of Lord-in-Waiting in Ordinary to HM Queen Victoria between 1880 and 1885.1 He succeeded to the title of 13th Earl of Dalhousie, co. Midlothian [S., 1633] on 20 July 1880.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Ramsay of Glenmark, co.
