Sir James Horn Burnett of Leys, 10th Bt. was born on 22 June 1801 at Crathes Castle, Kincardineshire, Scotland.2 He was the son of Sir Robert Burnett of Leys, 7th Bt. and Margaret Dalrymple-Horn-Elphinstone.1 He married, firstly, Caroline Margaret Spearman, daughter of Charles Spearman and Sarah Brooke, on 3 February 1831.1 He married, secondly, Lauderdale Ramsay, daughter of Sir Alexander Ramsay of Balmain, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Bannerman, on 12 July 1837.1 He died on 17 September 1876 at age 75 at Crathes Castle, Kincardineshire, Scotland.2
