Sir Alexander Ramsay of Balmain, 1st Bt. was born in 1757.2 He was the son of Sir Thomas Burnett of Leys, 6th Bt. and Catherine Ramsay.2 He married Elizabeth Bannerman, daughter of Sir Alexander Bannerman of Elsick, 4th Bt. and Elizabeth Sedgwick, on 8 October 1782 at East Harlsey, Yorkshire, England.1,3 He was also reported to have been married on 14 October 1782.2 He died on 17 May 1810, with five other daughters:.2
He was given the name of Alexander Burnett at birth.4 In 1806 his name was legally changed to Alexander Ramsay by Royal Licence.2 He gained the title of 1st Baronet Ramsay on 13 May 1806.2

Margaret Maitland was baptised on 11 July 1683 at North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland.2 She was the daughter of Sir Charles Maitland of Pitrichie, 3rd Bt. and Jean Forbes.1,2 She married Sir Patrick Bannerman, son of Sir Alexander Bannerman of Elsick, 1st Bt. and Margaret Scott, on 18 April 1714 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.1,2 She died on 31 October 1750 at age 67.2
