He married, firstly, Mary Holt, daughter of Rowland Holt, on 28 October 1750. He married, secondly, Anne Gascoigne, daughter of Sir Charles Gascoigne, on 6 March 1786. He died on 19 May 1794.
     Thomas Hamilton, 7th Earl of Haddington gained the title of 7th Earl of Haddington.
