James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope

     James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope was born in 1673.1 He was the son of Alexander Stanhope and Catherine Burghill.1 He married Lucy Pitt, daughter of Thomas Pitt, on 24 February 1713/14.1 He died on 5 February 1720/21.1
     He purchased the Chevening estate, Kent for £28,000 in 1717 from Anne Lennard, Baroness Dacre.3 He was created 1st Baron Stanhope of Elvaston, co. Derby [Great Britain] on 3 July 1717.4 He was created 1st Viscount Stanhope of Mahon, in the island of Minorca [Great Britain] on 3 July 1717.4 He was created 1st Earl Stanhope [Great Britain] on 14 April 1718.4

     Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope was born on 15 August 1714. He was the son of James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope and Lucy Pitt.1 He married Grizel Hamilton, daughter of Charles Hamilton, Lord Binning and Rachel Baillie, on 25 July 1745.2 He died on 7 March 1786 at age 71.2
     He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl Stanhope [G.B., 1718] on 5 February 1720/21.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount Stanhope of Mahon, in the island of Minorca [G.B., 1717] on 5 February 1720/21.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Stanhope of Elvaston, co. Derby [G.B., 1717] on 5 February 1720/21.1 He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.).1
