He married, firstly, Isobel Charlotte Weatherall, daughter of Captain Anthony E. Weatherall, in 1984. He married, secondly, Damaris Stuart-William in November 2005.2
     He succeeded to the title of 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1987.
