James Ruthven, 5th Lord Ruthven of Freeland was the son of Colonel James Ruthven of Graitney and Isabel Ruthven, Lady Ruthven of Freeland.2 He married, firstly, Janet Nisbet, daughter of William Nisbet of Dirleton, circa 1732.1 He married, secondly, Lady Anne Stuart, daughter of Sir James Stuart, 2nd Earl of Bute and Lady Anne Campbell, in July 1736.1 He died on 3 July 1783.1
