General Sir Torquil George Matheson of Lochalsh, 5th Bt. was born on 4 February 1871.3 He was the son of Sir Alexander Matheson of Lochalsh, 1st Bt. and Eleanor Irving Perceval.2 He married, firstly, Ella Louisa Linton, daughter of Captain John Wingfield Linton, on 2 July 1900.3 He and Ella Louisa Linton were divorced in 1923.3 He married, secondly, Lady Elizabeth Mary Gertrude Keppel, daughter of Lt.-Col. Arnold Allen Cecil Keppel, 8th Earl of Albemarle and Lady Gertrude Lucia Egerton, on 23 July 1923.1 He died on 13 November 1963 at age 92.3
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.3 He was officer in 1890.3 He was commissioned in 1894 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Coldstream Guards.3 He was Adjutant of the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards between 1897 and 1902.3 He fought in the Boer War, where he was mentioned in despatches.3 He was Regimental Adjutant of the Coldstream Guards between 1903 and 1905.3 He gained the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel.3 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches ten times.3 He was commander of the 3rd Battalion, 46th Scottish Infantry Brigade.3 He was commander of the 4th Division.3 He was commander of the 10th (Light) Division.3 He gained the rank of Brevet Colonel.3 He was commander of the Guards Division.3 He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1918.3 He was invested as a Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.3 He was commander of the Waziristan Field Force between 1920 and 1924.3 He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1921.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1930.3 He was GOC-in-C of the Western Command, India between 1931 and 1935.3 He gained the rank of General in 1934.3 He partipicated in an ordinance between 1938 and 1945; Member of the Ross and Cromarty County Council.3 He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Matheson, of Lochalsh, co.
