Lady Elizabeth Hay was born on 27 September 1820 at Yester.1 She was the daughter of George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale and Lady Susan Montagu.1 She married Lt.-Gen. Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington, son of Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and Hon. Catherine Sarah Dorothea Pakenham, on 18 April 1839 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England.1 She died on 13 August 1904 at age 83 at Bearhill Park, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England.1 She was buried on 19 August 1904 at Stratfield Saye House, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.1 Her will was probated on 8 September 1904, at over £13,000 gross, over £10,000 net.1
From 18 April 1839, her married name became Wellesley. She held the office of Lady of the Bedchamber between 1843 and 1858.1 As a result of her marriage, Lady Elizabeth Hay was styled as Duchess of Wellington on 14 September 1852.1 She held the office of Mistress of the Robes between 1861 and 1868.1 She was invested as a Lady, Royal Order of Victoria and Albert (V.A.) in 1892 3rd class.1
