Sir John Johnstone of that Ilk was born before 1550.1 He was the son of James Johnstone of that Ilk, younger and Margaret Hamilton.1 He married Margaret Scott, daughter of Sir William Scott of Kirkurd and Buccleuch, younger and Grizel Bethune.1 He died on 5 June 1587.1
